Nvidia Is Running a Synthetic Bank Inside Its Supply Chain

Nvidia has assembled over $300 billion in financial backstops, take-or-pay agreements, and residual-value guarantees to keep neoclouds buying silicon. When a hardware supplier underwrites the credit risk of its buyers, it is writing deep out-of-the-money puts on compute prices.

Over the past three years, Nvidia has pledged more than $70 billion in direct startup equity and assembled roughly $300 billion in customer-facing financial commitments. These range from a $105 billion backstop for SB Energy’s Ohio data center leased to OpenAI, to a $6.3 billion take-or-pay agreement on CoreWeave’s unused capacity through 2032, to a $500 billion infrastructure syndicate with Apollo, Blackstone, and Goldman Sachs where Nvidia guarantees up to a quarter of the hardware’s residual value.

Nvidia’s gross margins hover near 75 percent, but its customer base is splitting in two. The hyperscalers (Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft) still represent roughly half of Nvidia’s revenue and will spend around $800 billion on infrastructure this year. Yet every one of them is aggressively deploying internal silicon that costs a fraction of an Nvidia board to run specialized workloads. Bloomberg Intelligence estimates that internal custom processors will account for half the AI accelerator market by 2030. Alphabet can finance its buildout by selling 50-year bonds at 5.7 percent. Upstart neoclouds like CoreWeave, Sharon AI, and Firmus cannot borrow anywhere near that rate; CoreWeave’s recent debt carried a coupon nearly double Alphabet’s rate.

To keep specialized compute buyers purchasing at full price, Nvidia is stepping into the capital structure. When Nvidia offers neoclouds a six-year floor price on compute or guarantees Wall Street lenders that hardware will not depreciate past 25 percent of invoice value, it is not offering vendor credit in the traditional sense of an invoice loan. It is writing an out-of-the-money put option on the market clearing price of compute and on the second-hand market value of its own chips. The premium Nvidia receives for underwriting that downside tail is embedded directly into the 75 percent gross margin it books on day one.

There is a coherent industrial logic behind this structure. Unlike the telecom equipment vendors of 1999 that financed speculative dark fiber for carriers with no viable revenue model, Nvidia is backstopping an asset class where older generation hardware has maintained remarkable price stability. CoreWeave recently signed commercial contracts on Nvidia A100 chips that extend into 2029, nine years after the architecture launched. SemiAnalysis data indicates that one-year rental rates for an H100 still sit around $2.80 an hour, off barely ten percent from its launch pricing. Because GPU compute running on CUDA is fungible across multiple foundation model labs and enterprise workloads, Nvidia can argue that a repossessed or subleased data center retains immediate commercial liquidity.

The structural fragility of the arrangement lies in the correlation between chip depreciation and counterparty credit risk. The current price resilience of older silicon is primarily a function of acute hardware rationing rather than intrinsic durability. As inference workloads overtake frontier pre-training, low-cost custom application-specific integrated circuits and AMD alternatives erode the pricing floor. Michael Burry has pointed out that cloud operators are depreciating server silicon over five to six years when real economic obsolescence often occurs in two to three.

If aggregate compute demand decelerates even moderately, neoclouds cannot service their high-yield debt obligations. That shortfall triggers the revenue floor guarantees, forcing Nvidia to step in and purchase unused compute or absorb lease obligations at the exact moment its primary hardware sales slow down. When an equipment vendor writes guarantees on the performance of its own customers, its asset-side exposure and its off-balance-sheet liabilities share a single underlying variable. The collateral backing the guarantee is the very inventory whose market price is clearing lower.

With $99 billion in cash and liquid securities and roughly $200 billion in operating cash flow, Nvidia has the liquidity cushion to absorb isolated customer distress today. Yet by assembling $300 billion in synthetic credit commitments to close the cost-of-capital gap between neoclouds and hyperscalers, the company has transformed itself into the primary risk-clearing house for data center expansion. The cash flow that looks like pure technology margin at the top of the cycle is partially compensation for carrying the downside tail of the entire ecosystem.
